A Note from the Chair

With the approach of fall, our minds turn toward the November elections, which every year give us an opportunity to enter in a government "of the people, by the people, and for the people." What is the voter's responsibility in this democratic process? Each of us must make an educated choice, must cast an informed vote. So how do we get the information we need? Watching 30-second candidate TV ads only goes so far. Reading newspapers, watching in-depth news reports, listening to debates, exploring web sites for policy positions, stopping by local campaign storefronts, or calling local party representatives: These take a little time, but they help ensure our votes are really informed choices.

We are confronted every day with the devastating effects of this administration's policies, and it is time to make our voices heard - to exercise our rights. How many sacrifices have been made so that you and I can vote on Election Day? We urge you to be a part of this year's election process and to make sure that the vote you cast on November 7th is truly an informed choice. Democracy depends on it.

It is the best of times; it is the worst of times….and most of all, these are frightening times. Picking up the paper every morning is not for the faint of heart. The devastating news from afar-Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran-coupled with our troubles at home do not make for easy reading. It leaves each of us with the haunting question: How can I make a difference? As we head into the summer before the crucial 2006 mid-term elections, we must be more determined than ever to change the destructive policies of our country. That means fighting hard for new leadership in the Congress and Senate, a leadership that will bring a new hope of peace and justice at home and abroad. So how can we act locally to make this happen? Give Time-volunteering at the storefront, telephoning, poll watching, hosting house parties for candidates, having lawn signs, the list goes on and on. Give Money-help finance local party candidates and committee projects, like this newsletter, that enhance community and empower the voter. Spread the Word-talk about American ideals of integrity, truth, and justice….and, of course, our candidates….to everyone you meet. Imagine your dedication multiplied over and over again. By joining together we have a chance to create change in America; let's get going!
